The Olivet College softball team lost both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader today at Trine (Ind.) University in Angola, Ind. After losing the first game 8-1, the Comets lost the second game, 4-0.
In the first game, the Thunder led 5-0 through four innings. Olivet scored its run in the top half of the fifth inning. Senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) walked and went to second on sophomore Mallory Schug's (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta) single just inside the left field line. A Trine error advanced Robbins to third, and another error allowed her to cross the plate with the Comets' only run. The Thunder added an unearned run in the bottom half of the fifth and closed the scoring with a two-run sixth inning.
Schug and junior Christine Daub (Hudson) had Olivet's only two hits. Junior Katie Harper (Vassar) was charged with the loss. She gave up five runs (two earned) on 10 hits in three and two-third innings. Sophomore Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) threw in relief and also allowed two earned runs in the final two and one-third innings.
The first three innings of the second game was a pitcher's duel. Trine broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back suicide squeeze bunts. The Thunder tacked on another run in the sixth inning on two straight doubles. Olivet had its best chance to score in the sixth inning when Daub led off the frame with a double to deep centerfield and went to third on a groundout. A strikeout and lineout ended its threat.
The Comets were limited to four hits, including the first two of freshman Lindsey Maas' (Pinckney) collegiate career. One of her hits was a double. Sophomore Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) started in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits, while striking out six in five and one-third innings. Freshman Breanne Harmon (Quincy) pitched one and two-third innings of scoreless relief.
Olivet will return to action Saturday, April 17, when it hosts Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. Game time at the Cutler Athletic Complex is 1 p.m.
