Softball team loses heartbreaker to Calvin, 5-4
The Olivet College softball team lost a heartbreaker to Calvin College, 5-4, in the opening game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Olivet College softball team lost a heartbreaker to Calvin College, 5-4, in the opening game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The second game was postponed because of rain, and no official announcement has been made in regards to when the game will be played.
After the Knights scored a run in their first at-bat, Olivet answered with an unearned run in its half of the first. The Comets added three runs in the third inning. Junior Morgan Iloncaie (Port Huron/Imlay City) walked, stole second base and scored on a sophomore Kelsey Greene's (Burr Oak) double over the centerfielder's head.
Junior Christine Daub (Hudson) hit a single to move Greene to third base. Daub went to second on the throw to the plate. Freshman Meg Wernowsky (Bellevue) lined a single to plate Greene. On an errant pickoff throw, Daub scored. Calvin used a two-out rally to score three runs in the top half of the seventh. Olivet had the tying run on second with out in the seventh, but failed to score.
Offensively, the Comets had nine hits. Iloncaie went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Wernowsky was also 2-for-3. Greene collected two hits. In the circle, junior Katie Harper (Vassar) went six and two-third innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Sophomore Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on three hits in one-third inning.
