HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Olivet College softball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader, 7-3 and 9-0, this afternoon at Huntington (Ind.) University.
In the first inning of game one, Olivet jumped out to 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine). The Foresters tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the first and took a 6-2 lead with four runs in the second inning. The Comets got one run back in the top half of the fifth on back-to-back doubles by freshmen Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville). Huntington answered a run in its half of the fifth.
Offensively, the Comets out-hit Huntington, 8-7. Junior Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) had a pair of singles, while six others had one hit apiece. In the circle, senior Katie Harper (Vassar) was charged with the loss. She allowed just three earned runs, while striking out four.
In the nightcap, the Foresters scored one run in the first, two runs in the second, one run in the third and five runs in the fourth to cause the game to end early because of the eight-run mercy rule. Huntington pitcher Molly Long had a perfect game broken up in the fifth inning when she walked Coshow on four straight pitches to start the inning.
Olivet returns to action Thursday, April 7, when it hosts Hope College for its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is 3:30 p.m.
