Softball team sweeps Albion, 7-5 and 17-3
The Olivet College softball team swept a MIAA doubleheader from Albion College this afternoon at Dempsey Field in Albion. The Comets were down to their last out and scored four times in the seventh to stun the Britons, 7-5, in game one. Olivet won the nightcap, 17-3, in five innings.
ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team swept a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader from Albion College this afternoon at Dempsey Field in Albion. The Comets were down to their last out and scored four times in the seventh to stun the Britons, 7-5, in game one. Olivet won the nightcap, 17-3, in five innings.
In the opener, Albion plated three unearned runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Comets got one run back in the top half of the fourth inning when senior Lindsey Maas hit a single to score junior Terri Hurosky.
Olivet scored another run in the fifth inning when senior Alison Iuelle blasted a solo home run over the centerfield fence. The Comets trimmed their deficit to 5-3 with another single tally in the sixth on a RBI-single by Maas.
Freshman Maddie Siebenmark walked to lead off the seventh inning. After two flyouts, senior Marlene Packer reached base on an error by Briton third baseman. Siebenmark and Packer scored on senior Ciara Santos' double down the left field line. Santos went to third on the throw to the plate. Hurosky capped the come back with a home run.
With one out in the bottom half of the seventh, Albion had the tying run at the plate. A ground out back to the pitcher and a foul out ended the Britons' scoring threat.
Olivet finished the game with 10 hits. Hurosky, Maas and Packer each went 2-for-4. Hurosky, Maas and Santos collected two RBI apiece, while Hurosky and Santos each scored twice. In the circle, sophomore Jessica Duell earned the win. She allowed the two earned runs on six hits, with three strikeouts.
In game two, the top four batters in the lineup combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate and scored nine runs. Packer, Santos and freshmen Chelsea Luedtke and Lorren Springer each had two hits. Extra base hits in the game were doubles by Maas and Santos, and a triple by Springer.
Packer and Santos drove in three runs apiece, while Springer scored three times. Siebenmark threw five innings in the circle, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked nobody in gaining her third win of the season.
The Comets are off tomorrow and will return to action Thursday afternoon when they travel to Adrian College for two games, starting at 3:30 p.m.
