Softball team swept by Alma in home-opener
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was swept by Alma College in its home- and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Scots won by scores of 10-1 and 9-4.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team was swept by Alma College in its home- and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Scots won by scores of 10-1 and 9-4.

- The Scots took a 7-0 lead behind three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning.
- The Comets scored their run in the home half of the third. Freshman Sarah Shevenell and sophomore Erin Brady led off with back-to-back walks. After two outs were recorded, junior Kaylee Clothier lined a double down the left field line to score Shevenell.
- Alma capped the scoring with a three-run fourth inning.
- The game ended after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
- Olivet recorded three hits.
- Clothier, sophomore Kaitlyn Horstdaniel and senior Paige Poulter each tallied a double.
- In the circle, sophomore Jessica Barnes was charged with the loss. She yielded six runs on four hits and six walks in an inning.
- The Scots registered 10 hits.
- Haydn Terwilliger went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
- Hannah Falejczyk and Taylor Griffith each had two hits.
- Griffith, Aynslee Koutz and Chloe Deckrow collected two RBI apiece.
- Haley Ullrich threw the complete game, three-hitter to earn the pitching win. She struck out 11 batters.
- Per MIAA rules, the Comets batted as the visiting team in game two.
- Olivet used a two-out rally to push across four runs in the top half of the second inning. Freshman Katie Lenz was hit by a pitch, and Shenevell drew a walk. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. Junior Karina Marin singled up the middle to score Lenz and move Shenevell to third base. Junior Lily Eagleton then lined a double to the left-center field gap to plate Shenevell and advance Marin to third. Both runners came around to score on Clothier's single into the right-center field alley.
- The Scots trimmed their deficit in half with single tallies in the home half of the second and third innings before pushing across six runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-4 lead. Alma ended the scoring with another run in the fifth.
- Six different players had a base hit.
- Eagleton's double was the lone extra base hit.
- Lenz was tagged with the pitching loss, giving up seven runs on 12 hits over three and one-third innings.
- Alma tallied 18 hits in 34 at-bats.
- Deckrow was 4-for-4.
- Terwilliger had three hits, including a home run. She also drove in three runs and scored two runs.
- Koutz tallied three hits, with two doubles.
- Emma Fraser went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
- Daniella Little was the winning pitcher, throwing five and one-third innings of relief. She allowed just three hits, while striking out nine.
- The Comets are scheduled to play two games Friday at Albion College. Olivet faces the host Britons at 12 p.m., followed by a game against Kalamazoo College at 2 p.m.
