UOlivet loses both games of doubleheader at Manchester

N. MANCHESTER, Ind. – The University of Olivet softball team was on the losing end of both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Manchester (Ind.) University this afternoon at the MU Softball Field. The Spartans won the first game, 9-1, before coming-from-behind to win the nightcap, 4-3, in eight innings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Spartans scored a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Olivet got one run back in the third inning when junior Kaitlyn Witkowski hit an RBI-single to score freshman Jordan Reed. Manchester then erupted for seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the third.
- At the plate, the Comets were held to three hits, including two by freshman Mia Thurman. One of her hits was a double. Freshman Elliott Jarvi was the losing pitcher after giving all the runs (six earned) on nine hits over two and two-thirds innings.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Olivet took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Reed drew a leadoff walk on 10 pitches. Freshman Jo Ellen Holbrook singled. A double steal put both runners in scoring position. Sophomore Megan Cox lined a double to right-center field to score Reed.
- After the Spartans tied the game in the third, the Comets manufactured the go-ahead run in the fifth. Junior Olivia Burt reached on an infield single to lead off the inning. A sacrifice but by junior Haylie Wenke advanced Burt to second base. Following an out, senior Shaelyn Lampinen lined an RBI-single.
- In the seventh inning, the Comets extended their lead to 3-1 when junior Alexis Bond deposited a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence. The Spartans used four straight two-out singles to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to extras. Manchester scored the winning run on a slow roller to second base in the eighth.
- For the game, Olivet tallied six hits, including two by Holbrook. Cox threw the first six and two-thirds innings. Sophomore Alisha Gahn recorded the final out in the seventh before allowing the run in the eighth inning to be charged with the pitching loss.
UP NEXT
- Olivet hosts Wheaton (Ill.) College on Saturday for its home-opening doubleheader. The first pitch from game one is set for 1 p.m.
