OLIVET, MI. -- The Olivet College women's basketball team made eight free throws in overtime today as the Lady Comets defeated Concordia University, 65-61, at the 2002 OC Comet Classic. With the win, Olivet evens its record at 2-2 overall. Concordia now has a 2-8 overall record.
In the first half, Olivet led by as many as seven points on two occasions with the last time being at 13-6 when senior forward Louisa Grill (Williamston High School) made a layup. The Comets led 17-16 before Concordia closed the half with a 10-2 run to take a 26-19 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, Concordia built an 11-point lead at 30-19 before the Comets battled back with a 19-7 run to take a 38-37 lead. In the extra session, Olivet made all eight of its free throws while Concordia made four-of-six from the charity stripe. Junior Kim Strange (Ellsworth High School) canned two free throws with 18 seconds left to seal the game.
"We were very streaky today," said second-year Head Coach Deanna Richard. "Louisa (Grill) had another outstanding game as well as Karine (Campbell). Karine stepped up her play which allowed the other players to play their roles."
Leading the way for the Lady Comets was Grill with a game-high 32 points and 16 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards. In the game, she made eight-of-13 shots from the floor and 16-of-19 free throws. For her efforts, Grill was named to the all-tournament team. Senior guard Lindsey Brunworth (Hudson High School) added four three-pointers for 12 points. In addition, Campbell grabbed six rebounds and made five steals in her first collegiate start.
Olivet will next play on Wednesday, Dec. 11 when it travels to play Rochester College at 7 p.m.
