Women’s golf team finishes in ninth-place at O’Brien National Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Olivet College women's golf team finished in ninth-place at the O'Brien National Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament hosted by Saint Mary's College and played at University of Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course featured 10 colleges or universities, who finished within the top 11 at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships last May. Each is also ranked in the top 13 of the National Golf Coaches Association poll.

Defending national champion Methodist (N.C.) University took top honors with a two-day total of 633 (316-317) strokes. No. 3 Wisconsin-Eau Claire was second at 641 (318-323) strokes, followed by No. 9 Allegheny (Pa.) at 643 (336-307) strokes and No. 4 DePauw (Ind.) in fourth-place at 646 (317-329) strokes. No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) was fifth at 652 (327-225) strokes, followed by No. 5 and host Saint Mary's in sixth at 657 (324-333), No. 7 George Fox (Oregon), 662 (342-320); No. 13 Centre (Ky.), 664 (328-336); No. 12 Olivet, 678 (347-331); and No. 11 Southwestern (Texas), 395 (351-344).

The Comets were led by senior Abby Wheeler (Grayling) who posted a two-round total of 165 (85-80) strokes. Fellow senior Amber Conrad (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) finished at 169 (85-84) strokes. Junior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) and freshman Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) each had a two-day total of 172 strokes. Freshman Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) rounded out the starting lineup with a 179.

Olivet will return to action this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25, when it hosts the O.C. Fall Invitational at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. Friday has a 1 p.m. shogun start, and Saturday has a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.
