Women’s golf team finishes in 12th-place at Jekyll Island Invitational
The Olivet College women’s golf team finished in 12th-place at the 2012 Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, which was hosted by Oglethorpe (Ga.) University and on the Indian Mound Golf Course. The tournament featured 10 schools, including the No. 21 Comets, ranked in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association poll.
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Olivet College women's golf team finished in 12th-place at the 2012 Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, which was hosted by Oglethorpe (Ga.) University and on the Indian Mound Golf Course. The tournament featured 10 schools, including the No. 21 Comets, ranked in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association poll.
After shooting a 334 in Friday's round and a 345 in Saturday's round, Olivet shot a tournament-best 327 in today's final round. The score gives them a three-round total of 1,006 strokes. No. 1 Methodist (N.C.) College led the 21-team field with a 942, followed by College of Coastal (Ga.), 957; No. 4 Centre (Ky.) College, 958; No. 13 Mary Hardin Baylor (Tex.) College, 959: and No. 12 Claremont Mudd Scripps (Calif.) College, 960.
No. 18 Texas-Tyler was sixth at 967, followed by No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University, 978; No. 11 Allegheny (Pa.) College, 988; No. 20 Southwestern (Tex.) University, 989; Rhodes (Tenn.) College, 998; and No. 14 Birmingham Southern (Ala.) University, 999.
The Comets were led by sophomore Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland), as she tied for 25th-place in the player standings with a three-round total of 243 strokes. She had rounds of 80, 85 and team-low 78. Senior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) was two strokes behind with a 245 (82-83-80) to tie for 29th-place. Sophomore Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) posted a 248 (81-82-85).
After shooting a 95 each of the first two rounds, sophomore Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) lowered her score by 11 strokes today for a three-round total of 274 strokes. Freshman Jennifer Myers (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) had a 95 in today's round.
Olivet will return home tonight and then will not return to competition until Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15, at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling. The tournament will be played at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
