HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships featured two lightning delays before darkness suspended it for the Olivet College women's golf team. The championships are taking place at the Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Playing in the afternoon wave of teams, the Comet golfers had completed between 1-3 holes when the first lightning stoppage occurred, and play was halted for more than four hours. Play resumed for only about an hour before a second lightning delay happened, with each Olivet golfer finishing another 3-4 holes. After only a shorter 30-minute delay, the golfers were able to complete another three holes before darkness stopped the round, with the Comet golfers completing between 9-12 holes.
The morning wave of teams were able to complete their second round with Rhodes (Tenn.) College holding a five-stroke lead over University of Texas-Tyler, 634-639. Of the 12 teams still needing to complete their second round, Olivet currently has the best team score.
The NCAA announced the plan is to complete the second round tomorrow morning, starting at 7:30 a.m. After an hour break, the third round will begin in a format to be determined after the second round is finished.
