Torres Earns All-American Honors at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships
Freshman 197-pounder Justin Torres (Holly High School) earned NCAA All-American honors with his sixth-place finish on March 7-8 at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Ohio Northern University.
ADA, Ohio -- Freshman 197-pounder Justin Torres (Holly High School) earned NCAA All-American honors with his sixth-place finish on March 7-8 at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Ohio Northern University.
Torres opened the championships on Friday afternoon with a pin in 6:27. He then won his next match, 11-5, to advance to Saturday’s competition. In the semifinals, Torres fell to top-seeded Yan White of University of Wisconsin Stevens-Point, 10-3. During the match, he re-injured his shoulder and was forced to medically forfeit his remaining matches.
Torres ends his first year with a 31-4 record, including 17 wins via pin/fall. He is also the 16th wrestler in school history to earn NCAA All-American honors and only the second freshman to earn the honor.
Senior 149-pounder Chris Dunham (Nashville/Maple Valley High School) narrowly missed earning All-American honors. He opened the meet with a 4-2 sudden-death overtime victory. He then lost to top-seed and eventual champion Rami Ratel of Montclair State (N.J.) University in the quarterfinals. Dunham finishes his senior year with a 40-11 record.
