Olivet College wrestling team receives NWCA Scholar Award
The Olivet College wrestling team has received the 2003 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar Award. The Fighting Comets compiled a 3.41 team grade point average (GPA), which ranked second in NCAA Division III. Milwaukee School of Engineering in Wisconsin had the top GPA at 3.50.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College wrestling team has received the 2003 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar Award. The Fighting Comets compiled a 3.41 team grade point average (GPA), which ranked second in NCAA Division III. Milwaukee School of Engineering in Wisconsin had the top GPA at 3.50.
"This is a huge honor," said first-year Head Coach Steve Laidacker. "Academic success is also a goal for us, and our kids have worked very hard in both the classroom and on the mats."
In addition, senior 149-pounder Chris Dunham (Nashville/ Maple Valley High School) and sophomore 184-pounder Todd Miller (Casnovia/Kent City High School) earned All-Academic honors. Dunham carries a 3.20 GPA and participated in the 2003 NCAA Division III Championships. He ended the year with a 40-11 record. Miller has a 3.45 GPA and finished the season with a 18-15 record.
To be nominated, the wrestler must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA for his entire academic career. He must have finished at least sixth in the regional qualifier and also competed in at least half of his team’s competitions, compiling a .500 or better record
