Wrestling team finishes in a tie for 32nd-place at 44th Annual Midlands Championships
The Olivet College wrestling team finished in a tie for 32nd-place (out of 56 teams) at the 44th Annual Midlands Championships, which was hosted by Northwestern (Ill.) University at the Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Olivet College wrestling team finished in a tie for 32nd-place (out of 56 teams) at the 44th Annual Midlands Championships, which was hosted by Northwestern (Ill.) University at the Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Comets were granted five entries for the annual two-day tournament.
Olivet scored nine points and tied San Francisco State University. The Comets were also fourth among approximately 12 NCAA Division III schools.
Sophomores Jason Brew (Sparta) and Kyle Vanderhyde (Sparta) advanced to today’s session. Each bowed out of the tournament with a loss in the fifth round of the consolation bracket. At 157 pounds, Brew suffered a 3-1 overtime loss to No. 8 seed Brian Cobb, an indepependent wrestler. At 174 pounds, Vanderhyde fell to Iowa State’s David Bertalino, 5-2.
Junior 184-pounder Daron Cruickshank (Inkster/John Glenn) along with seniors Ken Andrews (Swartz Creek) at 157 pounds and Jeff Wright (Escanaba) at 197 pounds competed yesterday.
The Comets will next compete in the Tri-State (Ind.) University Triangular Sunday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. The third participating school is Mount Union (Ohio) College.
