The Olivet College wrestling team posted a 3-0 record at the Muskegon Community College Quad.
The Olivet College wrestling team posted a 3-0 record at the Muskegon Community College Quad. The Comets defeated Harper (Ill.) Community College, 30-25; Trine (Ind.) University, 45-3; and the host Jayhawks, 27-14.
Against Harper, the two teams split the five matches, but two forfeits and three pins propelled Olivet to the win. Winning by pin were freshman Kenny Richmond (Brighton) at 141 pounds, senior Nick Leon (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) at 149 pounds and senior Ben Hitchcock (Montrose) at 157 pounds.
Against Trine, the Comets won 9-of-10 bouts – two by forfeit, three by pin, one by technical fall, one by major decision and two by minor decision. Pins were recorded by Richmond, sophomore Justin Jaynes (Richmond) at 165 pounds and senior Joe McAllister (Sault Ste. Marie) at 197 pounds. At 184 pounds, freshman Josh Crawford (Birch Run) earned a 20-4 technical fall win. Hitchcock had a 10-1 major decision win, while Leon won 4-1 and freshman Jake Ceslick (Alpena) won 6-1.
Against Muskegon, Olivet had six wins. Richmond won his third straight match by pin. Leon got an escape point to start the third period and hung on to win 1-0. Hitchcock posted a 6-2 victory. Jaynes and sophomore Trevor Tyler (Roscommon) earned injury default wins, and Ceslick won 2-0.
The Comets will host Manchester (Ind.) College Tuesday, Jan. 12. Action at The Cutler Event Center gets started at 7 p.m.
