HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Olivet College senior Owen Guilford has been chosen the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for wrestling.
Guilford had a 4-0 record to take first-place in the 174-pound weight class at the Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational. His four wins were two first-period pins (1:10 and 2:29), one by technical fall (19-2) and one by major decision (12-2). Guilford outscored his four opponents, 39-4, in match points.
"Owen was full of confidence and his offense was in full display this weekend," said Olivet head coach Brandon Brissette. "Owen was setting up great shots and when pressured using that pressure to find even more scores. They way he rode in top position, it looked like his opponents were carrying someone twice his weight. We love watching him wrestling like this and against many of the top contenders in the region as well!"
Guilford and the Comets are back in action Thursday when they host Cleary University and Henry Ford College for a triangular, starting at 6 p.m. The first match features Cleary vs. Henry Ford, followed by Henry Ford vs. Olivet, and Cleary vs. Olivet.
