Olivet posts 3-1 record at Comet Duals

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet wrestling team welcomed 11 other schools today inside the Cutler Event Center for the 2024 Comet Duals. The Comets posted a 3-1 record – defeating No. 24 Cornell (Iowa) College, 32-10; King's (Pa) College 44-3; and John Carroll (Ohio) University, 22-17. Olivet fell to No. 6 Augsburg (Minn.) University, 34-11.
VS. CORNELL
- The Comets won seven of the 10 bouts against the Rams, who are ranked No. 4 in the most reccent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll. Olivet scored bonus points in six of the wins.
- Senior Benyamin Kamali started the Comets off with a 14-4 major decision victory over No. 2 regionally ranked Jase Van Pelt at 125 pounds.
- Senior Robert Davids recorded a takedown in overtime to eke out a 4-1 decision at 133 pounds.
- Senior Dylan Phelps overwhelmed his opponent with a 16-1 technical fall at 141 pounds.
- At 157 pounds, senior Ramiro Guerrero pinned his man in the first period.
- Senior Jay Shaull had a 20-3 technical fall win at 174 pounds.
- At 184 pounds, junior Gideon Loewen pinned the No. 4 nationally ranked Cael McLaren just past the halfway point of the opening period.
- Senior Boe Eckman hung for a 9-8 victory at 285 pounds.
VS. KING'S
- Olivet posted bonus-point victories in seven of the nine wins against the Monarchs.
- Phelps had the quickest pin of the match at 20 seconds.
- At 149 pounds, senior Tyler Herrema pinned No. 5 regionally ranked Shane Kibler in the first period at 2:15.
- Shaull also had a first-period pin at 2:13.
- At 285 pounds, sophomore Mason Knight won by pin at 4:34.
- Winning by technical fall were Kamali (21-6) and sophomore Juwan Vines (20-2) at 165 pounds.
- Senior Emmett Kettel scored an 11-1 major decision win at 133 pounds.
- Decision victories were by Guerrero (7-3) and Loewen (8-1).
VS. AUGSBURG
- The Auggies are the defending NCAA Division III champions and ranked No. 6 in the NWCA poll.
- Kamali began the match with a 17-2 technical fall.
- Phelps won an 8-5 decision over the No. 4 regionally ranked wrestler.
- Eckman posted a 3-0 shutout win.
VS. JOHN CARROLL
- The Comets and Blue Streaks split the 10 bouts. The difference was Olivet scored bonus points in each of their five wins – one pin and four major decisions, while John Carroll had only one bonus point win.
- Shaull pinned his opponent in the first period at 1:25.
- The major decisions were by Kamali (18-8), Phelps (18-8), Herrerma (13-3) and Guerrero (12-4).
