UOlivet posts 1-2 record on day one of 2025 NWCA National Dual Meet Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Olivet wrestling team won its first match before losing the next two matches today at the 2025 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships at the UNI Dome. The Comets beat No. 18-ranked Central (Iowa) College, 21-18, before falling to No. 3 Augsburg (Minn.) University, 51-0, and No. 13 Loras (Iowa) College, 26-12.
VS. CENTRAL
- The Comets and Dutch split the 10 matches. The three-point win was the result of two more bonus point wins (one technical fall and one major decision) for Olivet.
- At 125 pounds, senior Benyamin Kamali got the Comets off to a fast start when he pinned his opponent with 45 seconds left.
- At 133 pounds, senior Robert Davids hung for a 5-4 win over the No. 4 regionally ranked wrestler. The difference in the match was a reversal by Davids to start the second period.
- At 141 pounds, senior Dylan Phelps allowed a late takedown in a 4-1 loss to the No. 5 nationally ranked wrestler.
- Senior 149-pounder Tyler Herrema posted an 18-3 technical fall over the No. 13 nationally ranked wrestler.
- At 157 pounds, senior Ramiro Guerrero also gave up a takedown in the final seconds of the match against the No. 4 regionally ranked wrestler.
- After a loss in the 165-pound match, senior Jay Shaull won a 13-4 major decision against the No. 7 regionally ranked wrestler at 174 pounds.
- Central won the 184-pound match with a fall to close the team score gap to three points, 18-15.
- Senior Kody Krupp earned a hard-fought 4-1 overtime win over the No. 5 regionally ranked 197-pound wrestler. The win put the Comets ahead by six points, 21-15, for the team score.
- Senior Boe Eckman fell 9-4 at 285 pounds but the win for the Dutch was not enough to pull out the win.
VS. AUGSBURG
- The Auggies won all 10 matches against the Comets.
- Only one starter for Olivet wrestled in the match.
VS. LORAS
- The Duhawks won 6-of-10 matches, with four technical falls and two minor decisions. The Comets' four wins were minor decisions.
- After Olivet lost the first two matches by major decision, senior Dylan Phelps put the first three points on the team score line with a 5-3 win at 141 pounds.
- Herrema scored a reversal and three-point nearfall late in the 149-pound match to win a 9-4 decision over the No. 12 nationally-ranked wrestler.
- The Duhawks won three straight matches by technical fall to increase its lead in the team score to 23-6.
- At 184 pounds, junior Gideon Loewen posted a 13-7 minor decision win.
- Krupp claimed a 13-6 victory at 197 pounds.
- Loras closed out the match with a 7-4 decision at 285 pounds.
UP NEXT
- The Comets face Wabash (Ind.) College tomorrow on day two of the national duals. Action gets started at 11 a.m. CT. The winner will wrestle the winner of the Luther (Iowa) College versus Albion College match at 1 p.m. CT. The losers of the two matches will also battle at 1 p.m. CT.
