UOlivet splits two matches to finish 14th at 2025 NWCA National Dual Meet Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Olivet wrestling team posted a 1-1 record on the second day of the 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships held inside the UNI Dome. The No. 23-ranked Comets defeated No. 21-ranked Wabash (Ind.) College, 31-14, before falling 25-21 to No. 17-ranked Luther (Iowa) College, 25-21.
VS. WABASH
- Wabash won the first two weight classes. The Comets then reeled off seven straight wins (one pin, three technical falls, one major decision and two minor decisions). The Little Giants closed the match with a win at 285 pounds.
- At 141 pounds, senior Dylan Phelps started Olivet's run with a 4-0 shutout win.
- At 149 pounds, senior Tyler Herrema posted a 15-2 major decision victory.
- At 157 pounds, senior Ramiro Guerrero used a takedown and two-point nearfall in the final seconds along with the riding time point to record a 25-10 technical fall.
- At 165 pounds, sophomore Juwan Vines eked out a 6-3 win over the No. 7 regionally ranked wrestler.
- In a showdown of regionally ranked wrestlers at 174 pounds, senior and No. 6-ranked Jay Shaull earned a 16-1 technical fall with 54 seconds remaining in the second period. His opponent is ranked No. 3.
- At 184 pounds, junior Gideon Loewen pinned his opponent in 54 seconds.
- At 197 pounds, senior Kody Krupp capped the win with an emphatic 18-1 technical fall with 1:47 left in the bout.
VS. LUTHER
- The Norse and Comets split 10 matches. The difference in the match was Luther scored bonus points in four of its wins, while Olivet had only two bonus-point wins.
- After the Comets lost the 125-pound match, senior Robert Davids evened the team score with a 6-1 win.
- The teams traded pins at the next two weights, as the Norse won at 141 and sophomore Aden Baynes won with a 48-second pin at 149 pounds.
- Luther answered with another pin to go up 15-9.
- At 165 pounds, sophomore Kyan Larson jumped out to a 6-2 lead and went on to win a 13-9 decision to make the score 15-12.
- The teams exchanged pins for a second time in the match, as the Norse had the fall at 174 pounds and Loewen pinned his opponent in four minutes and two seconds over the No. 8-regionally ranked wrestler.
- Luther sealed its win with an 8-0 major decision victory at 197 pounds.
- Sophomore Mason Knight won a tiebreaker match, 3-2, at 285 pounds.
UP NEXT
- Olivet begins its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule next Thursday, January 16, when it welcomes Trine (Ind.) University to the Cutler Event Center. The varsity matches will start at 7 p.m.
