OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet wrestling team opened its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule with a dominating 43-0 shutout victory over Trine (Ind.) University tonight at the Cutler Event Center.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Olivet 43, Trine 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Comets won each of the 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in six. Three of the six bonus-point victories were pins, one was a technical fall and two were major decisions.

FOR THE COMETS

  • At 125 pounds, freshman Sean Pettigrew fought back from a 6-2 deficit to win a 9-6 decision. The difference in the match was a two-point nearfall and penalty point in the third period.
  • At 133 pounds, senior Robert Davids won a 12-2 major decision. His 12 points included three takedowns.
  • At 141 pounds, senior Dylan Phelps jumped out to a 9-3 lead after the first period and went on to win a 15-4 major decision.
  • At 149 pounds, senior Tyler Herrema was winning 16-3 when he scored a takedown and took his opponent straight to his back for a pin 40 seconds into the second period.
  • At 157 pounds, senior Ramiro Guerrero earned a 16-1 technical fall win with 1:05 left in the third period.
  • At 165 pounds, sophomore Kyan Larson overcame an injury in the first period to come back and post 12-9 win.
  • At 174 pounds, senior Jay Shaull had the quickest pin of the night, recording it with three seconds left in the first period.
  • At 184 pounds, freshman Jack Ward scored a three-point nearfall in the third period to win 8-5.
  • At 197 pounds, junior Gideon Loewen was down 7-5 after the opening period. He quickly got out from the bottom position to start the second period before using a takedown and tilt to pin his man 21 seconds into the period.
  • At 285 pounds, sophomore Mason Knight had a takedown in the first period and hung for a 4-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Tonight's match was the 24th all-time meeting between Trine and Olivet on the wrestling match.
  • The Comets now lead the series, 23-1.
  • Olivet has won 16 straight in the series.
  • The only other shutout in the series was the first match-up on January 19, 2005, when the Comets won 49-0.
  • The last time Olivet shutout an opponent in a countable match was 49-0 over Manchester (Ind.) University on February 7, 2023.
  • The Comets' last shutout against an MIAA opponent in a league match was 55-0 over Adrian College during the 1983-84 season.
