Vines' runner-up performance leads UOlivet to fifth-place finish at ONU Polar Bear Invitational

ADA, Ohio – Junior Juwan Vines finished second in the 174-pound bracket to lead The University of Olivet wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at 44th Annual Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational held today at the ONU Sports Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite not having any wrestlers in the lightest three weights, the Comets scored 97.0 points. Nine Olivet wrestlers placed in the top eight of their respective weight class. The host Polar Bears took first with 178.5 points.
- Vines finished second in the 174-pound bracket. He reached the championship match with three straight pins – 6:04 over Matt Galemno from Tiffin (Ohio) University, 2:03 over Rylan Haney from Ohio Northern and 6:08 over Jonathan Braun from Bethany (W.Va.) University. Vines lost the championship match, 8-4, against Isaac Lacinski from Tiffin.
- Freshman Gabriel Gibbons was third in the 149-pounds. He won his first three matches – 24-4 technical fall over Richard Flores from Tiffin, pin at 2:03 against Joe Conti from Heidelberg (Ohio) University and pin at 1:46 against Nathan Westinghouse from Hiram (Ohio) College. Gibbons was pinned in the semifinals, but bounced back to win his next two matches, 10-7 over Aaron Turner from Ohio Northern and an injury default in the third-place match.
- With a 4-1 record, sophomore Jack Ward posted a third-place finish at 184 pounds. He eked a 2-0 win in the first round over Javon Lewis from Otterbein (Ohio) University and then won 10-0 over AJ Tomaino from Waynesburg (Pa.) University. Ward lost his semifinal match, 16-10. He rebounded to win two decisions over wrestlers from Otterbein (Ohio) University – 7-1 against Logan Cormell and 8-6 against Javon Lewis.
- Junior Mason Knight had a third-place finish at 285 pounds. He pinned his first-round opponent – Jahill Davis from Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University – in 3:49 and then dropped a tough 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Knight then won four straight matches – 18 second pin against Elijah Frizzell from Randolph (Va.) College, 7-2 decision over Hunter Probasco from Ohio Northern, 1-0 decision over Austin Fleming from Waynesburg and 5-3 decision over Troy Dyszkiewicz from Ohio Northern.
- Also, at 149 pounds, junior Aden Baynes placed fourth. He split his four matches, including a first-period pin.
- Sophomore George Daniel took sixth at 285 pounds.
- Finishing seventh were senior Darren McLeod at 157 pounds and sophomore Julian Terranova at 165 pounds.
- Placing eighth was sophomore Richard Davis at 184 pounds.
