UOlivet defeats Adrian, 34-12, to secure 16th MIAA championship in school history

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet wrestling team dominated Adrian College, 34-12, tonight inside the Cutler Event Center. With the win, the Comets secured the 2026 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Comets won 7-of-10 bouts. Olivet earned bonus points in six of the wins – three pins, two major decisions and one technical fall.
- The match started at 125 pounds, where the Bulldogs earned a forfeit win. The Comets had an immediate response with a pin at 133 pounds to even the score. Adrian answered with a 5-3 decision win at 141 pounds. Olivet then strung together four bonus-point victories to stretch its lead to 25-9.
- The Bulldogs scored their final three team points with an 8-3 win at 184 pounds. The Comets capped the win with a pin at 197 pounds and decision win at 285 pounds.
FOR THE COMETS
- At 133 pounds, freshman Trenden Bashore recorded a pin just one minute and seven seconds into the bout.
- At 149 pounds, freshman Gabriel Gibbons notched a pin with 20 seconds remaining in the bout.
- At 157 pounds, senior Darren McLeod posted an 11-1 major decision.
- At 165 pounds, junior Juwan Vines needed only two minutes and 12 seconds to tally a 20-4 technical fall.
- At 174 pounds, junior Kyan Larson overwhelmed his opponent in a 15-2 major decision.
- At 197 pounds, senior Gideon Loewen registered a pin with 31 seconds left in the bout.
- At 285 pounds, junior Mason Knight scored a takedown in the third period to win 5-2.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Olivet wrestling program has now won 16 MIAA titles. The others were 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025.
- Tonight's match was the 36th all-time meeting between the Bulldogs and Comets.
- Olivet leads the series 24-12.

- A group of reserve wrestlers will compete on Saturday at the Mid-States Invitational, hosted by Alma College. The starters are back in action Friday and Saturday, February 27-28, at the NCAA Division III Central Regional Tournament, hosted by John Carroll University (Ohio).
