Junior captain Justine Zachos (Charlotte/Fowlerville) scored two goals to help the Olivet College women's soccer team beat Marygrove, 2-0, in its home-opener today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Zachos scored both goals in the first half. The first one came at 36:31 mark when the Mustang goalkeeper turned the ball over in the box, and she was able to get the ball past her. The second goal came just 1:04 later off a cross by freshman Rebecca Gaarde (Parma/Western).
"I was really happy with the second goal," said Zachos. "It was a header, and it was off a cross by Becca. She stepped up and placed the ball right where it needed to be."
Olivet finished the game with a 23-10 advantage in shots. Gaarde had eight shots, while Zachos had five. Sophomore Lizzy Julian (Mattawan) took four shots. In goal, junior Megan Colby (Sparta/Cedar Springs) recorded the shutout, while making seven saves.
""It was good to get a win to start the season," said Olivet Head Coach Hans Morgan. "I thought it was great to open at home in front of a great crowd. I was also happy for Justine (Zachos). It's great to have a captain step up and score goals. We feel there are some things to improve on, but we're very happy to start the season off on the right foot."
The Comets are back in action Friday and Saturday when they participate in the Trine (Ind.) University Classic. On Friday, Olivet plays Huntington (Ind.) University at 5 p.m., and on Saturday, the Comets play Grace (Ind.) College at 11 a.m.
