Women’s soccer team falls to Calvin, 6-2
The Olivet College women’s soccer team fell to MIAA rival Calvin College, 6-2, tonight on Senior Night and under the lights at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Before the game, Danielle Mellor was recognized for playing in her final home game.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College, 6-2, tonight on Senior Night and under the lights at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Before the game, Danielle Mellor (Macomb/Regina) was recognized for playing in her final home game.
The Comets took a 1-0 lead just seven minutes and 30 seconds into the game. Sophomore Jenna Mayle (Ionia) played the ball to freshman Brooke Leach (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley). Leach sent the ball to sophomore Mary Lamp (Alpena), who kneed the ball into the back of the net.
Calvin knocked in the game-tying goal in the 25th minute, and scored the go-ahead goal with only 11 seconds left before halftime.
In the second half, the Knights scored three times in a span of six minutes to take a 5-1 lead. Olivet got one goal back in the 74th minute. After the Calvin keeper came up to play the ball, junior Becca Gaarde (Parma/Western) sent a shot into a wide open net. The Knights closed the scoring in the 77th minute.
Olivet finished the game with five shots, including two each for Lamp and junior Marcee Lettinga (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central). Freshman goalie Patty Groh (Mason) allowed all six goals, faced 27 shots and made eight saves, while playing all 90 minutes.
For Calvin, Liz Cancel recorded a hat trick. Danielle Carter, Samantha Osterhaven and Paige Rindle had one goal apiece. Three of the six goals were unassisted.
The Comets will be on the road for their final two games of the 2011 season. On Saturday, they play Adrian College at noon, and next Tuesday, Nov. 1, they play at Trine (Ind.) University at 4 p.m.
