OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team ended its season with a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
After the score was tied at 0-0 at halftime, the Britons scored their first goal only two minutes and 29 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Lauren Vanderhoff (Sterling Hts./Henry Ford II) had her shot saved by the Briton keeper in the 63rd minute. Olivet finally broke through with the equalizer in the 75th minute. Junior Brooke Leach (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley) gathered a loose ball in the box, and sent a low shot into the net at the near post.
The Comets had chances to score the go-ahead but each time the shot was just off the mark, so the game went into overtime. One minute and 48 seconds into the extra period, Vanderhoff took a shot towards the far post, and her shot was just turned away by the keeper. After an Olivet player was called for a foul, Albion was given a free kick where the ball was sent into the box to the feet of Jessica Bidock, who chipped a shot over the Comet keeper.
Olivet dominated the stat sheet in every category except the one that mattered. The Comets had a 25-6 advantage in total shots. Vanderhoff and senior Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) took six shots. Sophomore Deanna Zolnoski (Macomb/Henry Ford II) collected two saves, while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
The Comets finish the 2013 season with a 7-12 record and were seventh in the MIAA standings with a 4-12 mark.
