Swimming teams fall to Carthage
Despite suffering losses to Carthage (Wisc.) College, the Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming teams had some notable performances in the second day of competition. The Olivet men fell by a score of 173-137, while women lost, 181-126.

The Comet men posted five first-place finishes. Leading the way was senior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha) who collected two firsts, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:58.98) and 400-yard individual medley (4:27.09). Other individual winners were sophomores Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) in the 100-yard backstroke (:54.77) and Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) in the 100-yard butterfly (:53.60). Olivet's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Beckwith, senior Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt), sophomore Mike Harden (St. Johns) and freshman Austin Munn (Pinckney) took first in 3:17.02.
The Olivet women also recorded five first-places. Also scoring first-place points were freshman Jessica Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:33.75), senior Heather Michalsen (Plymouth/Salem) in the 400-yard individual medley (5:07.52), senior Kalee Redder (Jenison) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.13) and senior Lauren Siedlik (Livonia/Churchill) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.49). The 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of junior Jackie Taylor (Plainwell), Howard, senior Kelly Schulze (Kalamazoo/Central) and Redder was first, touching the wall in 3:58.01.
The Comets will open the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association portion of their schedule next Saturday, Nov. 1, at Kalamazoo College. Action gets started at 1 p.m.
