Swimming and diving teams compete at Hillsdale
The Olivet College swimming and diving teams competed in a triangular today at Hillsdale College’s John “Jack” McAvoy Natatorium. The women’s team fell to the host Chargers, 152-86, and edged Ohio Northern University (ONU), 123-117. The men’s team defeated ONU, 130-109.

The Olivet women posted three first-place finishes, including two for senior Amy Johnson (Gaylord). She broke the own school record and recorded a NCAA Championships "B" cut in both the 50 freestyle (:24.25) and 100 freestyle (:53.02).
Also taking first was senior Kalee Redder (Jenison) in the 200 freestyle (2:03.67). Freshman Lauren Spray (Lake Forest, Ill.) was a close second in the 200 freestyle (2:03.62). Johnson, sophomore Jami Lingbeek (Plainwell), junior Jackie Taylor (Plainwell) and Redder placed second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:44.89).
Freshman Megan Waschak (Battle Creek) was second on both diving boards. She scored 225.65 points on the one-meter and 217.61 points on the three-meter.
The Olivet men had the fastest time or score in 10-of-13 events. Sophomores Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) and Mike Harden (St. Johns) were triple winners. Beckwith was first in the 100 backstroke. He teamed with sophomore Zach McMunigal (Grand Blanc/Flint Powers Catholic), sophomore Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) and freshman Jon Bachman (Battle Creek/Lakeview) for a first-place finish the 200 medley relay (1:41.62).
Harden won the 50 freestyle (:22.00) and 100 butterfly (:54.29). Harden, Beckwith, sophomore Rick Kinsey (Chelsea) and freshman Austin Munn (Pinckney) recorded the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.64).
Senior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha) touched the wall first in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle with times of 10:02.45 and 4:50.43, respectively. Swimming in his first meet this season, Kinsey was first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.98).
Freshman Michael Conger (Plymouth) completed the 400 individual medley in 4:29.23; which was more than five seconds quicker than the second-place finisher. Senior Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) took top honors on the one-meter diving board with 253.30 points.
The Comets return to the pool next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22-23 when they compete at the Washington University Thanksgiving Invitational in St. Louis, Mo.
