Women's tennis team beats Anderson, 8-1
The Olivet College women’s tennis team won five-of-six singles matches and three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 win today at Anderson (Ind.) University.
The Olivet College women's tennis team won five-of-six singles matches and three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 win today at Anderson (Ind.) University.
In singles play, juniors Corey Jager (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) and Rachel Vilums (Hudsonville) each earned 6-1, 6-1 wins at the No. 4 and No. 1 flight, respectively. Freshman Jaclyn Mummaw (Buchanan) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Junior Jaime Morrison (Marshall) claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Junior Lindsey Struble (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) had a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The winning doubles teams were Mummaw and Vilums at No. 1, Jager and Struble at No. 2 and Morrison and sophomore Abbie Utberg (Commerce Twp./Walled Lake Central) at No. 3.
In exhibition matches, the Comets (6-8) won twice in singles and once in doubles. Winning in singles was Utberg and freshman Kristina Mellinger (Constantine). Their scores were 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively. Mellinger joined with junior Mallory Bailey (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) to win the doubles match.
Olivet will continue its weekend trip through the state of Indiana with a pair of non-conference matches tomorrow at Huntington (Ind.) College. The Comets will play Huntington at 9 a.m., followed by a match against the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Olivet will wrap-up its trip with a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association match Sunday afternoon at Tri-State (Ind.) University at 1 p.m.
