Women’s tennis team defeats Westminster, 8-1
The Olivet College women’s tennis team swept the three doubles matches and won five-of-six singles matches to beat Westminster (Pa.) College, 8-1, this afternoon at the Port Royal Racquet Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Olivet College women's tennis team swept the three doubles matches and won five-of-six singles matches to beat Westminster (Pa.) College, 8-1, this afternoon at the Port Royal Racquet Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Winning in doubles play were the tandems of Mallory Bailey (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix)-Rachel Vilums (Hudsonville), Jaclyn Mummaw (Buchanan)-Abbie Utberg (Commerce Twp./Walled Lake Central) and Corey Jager (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix)-Lindsey Struble (Battle Creek/Harper Creek).
Utberg and Vilums captured wins in singles play by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores at No. 1 and 3, respectively. At No. 4 singles, Jaime Morrison (Marshall) lost the first set, 6-4, bounced back to win the second set, 6-2, and earned the win with an 11-9 super-tiebreaker victory. Celeste Gruber (South Haven) won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Struble lost only game en route to an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
The Comets (2-1) will wrap-up their spring break trip tomorrow with a 2 p.m. match against Bridgewater (Va.) College.
