Women’s tennis team splits two matches at 2009 MIAA Tournament
The Olivet College women’s tennis team split two matches today at the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament, which is being hosted by Kalamazoo College.
The Olivet College women's tennis team split two matches today at the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament, which is being hosted by Kalamazoo College. In their first match, the No. 7 seed Comets were defeated by No. 2 seed Calvin College, 7-0, at the West Hills Athletic Club. In its second match, Olivet defeated No. 6 seed Alma College, 5-3, at the Kalamazoo YMCA. With the win against Alma, the Comets have a 10-9 overall record and equal their school-record win total from 2007.
Against Calvin, the closest match for Olivet came at No. 2 doubles where the duo of junior Celeste Gruber (South Haven) and freshman Kelsey Singer (Brooklyn/Columbia Central) lost an 8-6 pro-set.
Against Alma, the Comets got off to a fast start by winning two of three doubles flights. The No. 1 duo of Giana Guerra (Lansing/Waverly) and Jaclyn Mummaw (Buchanan) posted an 8-2 win, while Gruber and Singer won, 8-4, at No. 2. Olivet sealed the win when Mummaw, Guerra and Singer each won in straight sets during singles play. Mummaw had a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1, Guerra won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Singer earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4.
The Comets will return to the courts tomorrow afternoon at noon when they play in the fifth-place match against No. 5 seed Saint Mary's (Ind.) College.
