Women’s tennis team loses two matches at MIAA Tournament
The women’s tennis team lost two matches today at the 2011 MIAA Tournament today at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo. In the first match, the Comets fell to the host Hornets, 5-1, and in their back draw match, they lost to Alma College, 5-3.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College women's tennis team lost two matches today at the 2011 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament today at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo. In the first match, the Comets fell to the host Hornets, 5-1, and in their back draw match, they lost to Alma College, 5-3.
Against Kalamazoo, sophomore Caitlin LaValley (Battle Creek/Pennfield) scored Olivet's only point at the No. 1 singles position. She won the first set 6-3, lost the second set 6-4, and rebounded to win the match tiebreaker, 10-5.
Against Alma, Olivet won 2-of-3 doubles flights. The No. 1 duo of LaValley and junior Kelsey Singer (Brooklyn/Columbia Central) posted an 8-3 victory. The No. 2 duo of Jenna Baker (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and junior Giana Guerra (Lansing/Waverly) won 8-6. LaValley recorded the only point in singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win.
The Comets end their season with a 9-10 overall record. LaValley had an 11-8 record in singles play. She and Singer posted an 11-6 mark in doubles. Guerra was 11-5 at No. 2 singles. Singer finished with 10 wins in singles, including nine at the No. 3 position.
