Volleyball has 1-1 record at River City Classic, Brann earns All-Tournament honors
The Olivet College volleyball team split two matches this afternoon at the Marietta College River City Classic. After losing in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18) to Methodist (N.C.) University, the Comets bounced back to beat Oberlin (Ohio) College in a thrilling five-set match (26-24, 25-11, 13-25, 23-25, 15-8).

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Olivet College volleyball team split two matches this afternoon at the Marietta College River City Classic. After losing in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18) to Methodist (N.C.) University, the Comets bounced back to beat Oberlin (Ohio) College in a thrilling five-set match (26-24, 25-11, 13-25, 23-25, 15-8). For her efforts in the tournament, freshman middle hitter Emma Brann (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) earned all-tournament honors.
Against Methodist, Brann posted a team-leading 10 kills, with only one attack error on 20 attempts for a .450 hitting percentage. Juniors Sarah Gandy (Battle Creek/Pennfield) and Kristen Sharpley (Marshall) each had five kills. Sophomore Cassie McDonald (Battle Creek/Pennfield) led the way with 27 set assists. Freshman Megan VanderVlucht (McBain) recorded 16 digs. At the service line, Olivet had 10 aces, including three by Brann and two each for McDonald and sophomore Kaitlyn Salhaney (Caledonia/East Kentwood).
Against Oberlin, senior Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) had a team-leading 11 kills, followed by Brann with nine and freshman Mackenze Inman (Union City) with eight. Senior Lacee Boone (Otsego) finished with 20 set assists. VanderVluct paced the defense with 11 digs, while Inman had 10. Salhaney recorded five of Olivet's 13 service aces.
The Comets will now play three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matches next week. On Tuesday, they host Adrian College at 6:30 p.m., and then go on the road Friday evening for a 6:30 p.m. match at Albion College and wrap-up the week Saturday evening with a 6 p.m. home match against Saint Mary's (Ind.) College.
