Volleyball: Olivet bounced by Belles in four close sets
The Olivet College volleyball team fell to Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College in four close sets (23-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-22) tonight at the Angela Athletic Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Olivet College volleyball team fell to Saint Mary's (Ind.) College in four close sets (23-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-22) tonight at the Angela Athletic Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
Olivet led the first set 11-9 before the Belles went on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 13-11 lead. After Saint Mary's grabbed a 16-14 advantage, the Comets responded with five straight points to gain a 19-16 lead. Olivet continued to hold a lead until the Belles tied the set at 22-22. Back-to-back kills by senior Stefanie Lang helped the Comets regain a 24-22 lead. Saint Mary's got a kill for a point. Olivet won the set 25-23 when Lang pounded down her sixth kill of the set.
The Comets had a 15-11 lead in the second set. The Belles came back with a 6-0 run for a 17-15 lead, which they did not relinquish for the remainder of the set. They won it 25-18.
Saint Mary's opened the third set with an 8-2 lead. Olivet answered with eight consecutive points to gain a 10-8 lead. The Comets continued to lead until the Belles saved a set point with an ace to tie the set at 24-24. The Comets scored a point on a kill by sophomore Gabrielle Trudell but Saint Mary's responded with three straight kills to win the set, 27-25.
The Belles scored the first point of the fourth set and never gave up the lead. The turning point of the set was when Saint Mary's turned a one-point lead 14-13 into a 20-14 lead by scoring six of the next seven points. Twice, Olivet was able to trim its deficit down to two points, with the last time being 24-22. A kill ended the set and match in favor of the Belles.
For the match, the Comets had 50 kills, while Saint Mary's had 57. The Belles served 13 aces to only three aces for Olivet. At the net, Lang led all players with 18 kills. Junior Marissa Guile and Trudell finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Senior Taylor Pringle finished with 22 set assists, and sophomore Danielle Bearden had 14 assists. Sophomore Mona Hinamanu topped the back row with 22 digs. Freshman Courtney Cronkright was next with 16 digs.
Olivet (2-4, 1-1 MIAA) hosts Adrian College tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m.
