Women’s volleyball team drops five-set match to Oberlin at “Battle at the Point”

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Olivet College women's volleyball team fell to Oberlin (Ohio) College in its first match at the 2021 "Battle at the Point" held inside the Cedar Point Sports Force Park in Sandusky, Ohio. The Comets lost in five sets (25-17, 19-25, 25-8, 19-25, 15-9).

- Oberlin scored the first four points of the opening set and never looked back.
- Behind the service of sophomore Olivia DuFore, Olivet led 7-0 to start the second set. The Comets pushed their advantage to nine points, 18-9, before settling for the six-point win, 25-19.
- The Yeowomen used a 7-0 run to turn a 1-1 tie into an 8-1 lead in the third set. Olivet could not recover from the deficit, losing the set by a 25-8 score.
- The Comets led by three points on three occasions in the fourth set. After the last time at 8-5, Oberlin went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Olivet fought back with a 9-3 spurt to go up 17-13. The Yeowomen closed the gap to two points before four Comet points made the score 21-15. Olivet went on to win the set 25-19.
- Except for a 1-1 tie, Oberlin led the entire fifth and deciding set.
- DuFore topped the front row attack with eight of Olivet's 28 kills.
- Junior Ellie Louiselle was next with seven kills.
- Freshman Madison Johnson dished out 13 assists.
- DuFore and senior Drue Mullin each recorded 13 digs.
- Cami Sweet registered 12 kills, with only one error on 22 attempts for a .500 attack percentage.
- Andrea James tallied 11 kills.
- Taylor Gwynne collected 29 set assists.
- Moo DeHaro posted a match-high 15 digs.
- The "Battle at the Point" is a cross-over tournament between the nine Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schools and the nine North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schools. The top three schools from each conference were paired against each other, followed by the fourth thru sixth-best schools and lastly the seventh thru ninth-best schools. The MIAA used the 2020-21 standings to determine its rankings, while the NCAC used the 2019 standings to determine its standings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAC did not sponsor a volleyball season in 2020-21.
- The Comets stay in Ohio tonight to play two matches tomorrow. Olivet faces Kenyon (Ohio) College at 12:30 p.m., followed by a match against Allegheny (Pa.) College.
