Olivet drops four-set match to Adrian in MIAA-opener

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet women's volleyball team began Michigan Athletic Association (MIAA) play by losing a four-set match against Adrian College this evening inside the Cutler Event Center.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Adrian defeated Olivet 25-14, 25-22, 15-25, 25-18

- Records: Olivet 12-6 overall, 0-1 MIAA; Adrian 4-7 overall, 1-0 MIAA
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set. Olivet battled back to even the score at 7-7. Adrian scored the next four points to take a 11-7 lead. The Bulldogs did not relinquish its advantage for the rest of the set.
- Back-to-back kills by senior Abi Nunez put the Comets ahead 4-2 in the second set. Three Adrian points made the score 5-4. With the Bulldogs clinging to a one-point lead at 6-5, Olivet scored six straight points to gain a five-point cushion. Adrian responded with a 6-1 run to tie the score at 12-12. The Comets answered with a 5-0 spurt to go back up by five, 17-12. Olivet was able hold onto a two-point lead at 21-19. The Bulldogs put three consecutive points on the scoreboard to take a 22-21 lead. After a service error leveled the score, Adrian scored the last three points to win the set 25-22.
- The Comets led the third set from start-to-finish to force a fourth set.
- In the fourth set, Olivet built an early two-point lead, 6-4. The Comets maintained that cushion at 9-7. The Bulldogs answered with a 7-1 spurt for a 14-10 lead. The Comets fought back to close the gap to a point on three occasions. Following a third time at 18-17, Adrian scored seven of the final eight points to close out the set and match.
- For the match, Olivet had seven more kills than the Bulldogs, 50-43. The difference in the match was Adrian posted a higher attack percentage at .201 to .105 for the Comets.
FOR THE COMETS
- Nunez pounded down a match-best 17 kills.
- Sophomore Julia Hall also had double figures in kills with 11. She finished with a team-best .429 hitting percentage.
- Junior Isabella Wagasy recorded eight kills.
- Senior Teagan Giannunzio tallied 37 set assists.
- Junior Jaydn Cary topped all players with a match-high 24 digs.
- Freshman Ashlynn Giannunzio was next with 19 digs.
