UOlivet upended in four sets at Saint Mary’s

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Olivet women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Saint Mary's (Ind.) College in a non-conference match tonight at the Angela Athletic Center. The Comets and Belles split the first two sets before Saint Mary's won the third and fourth sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Olivet scored the first point on a solo block by junior Julia Hall, the Belles reeled off four straight points. Saint Mary's held the advantage for the rest of the set.
- Neither team led by more than three points for the duration of the second set. Late in the set, the Belles went up by two points, 22-20. A kill by freshman Payton Smith and ace by junior Kaylee McDaniel tied the score. Saint Mary's answered with a kill before three consecutive Belle attack errors gave the set to the Comets.
- The Belles built a four-point cushion, 16-12, in the third set. Olivet responded with a 6-1 run to take its first lead, 18-17. Saint Mary's ended the set with an 8-2 spurt.
- The early part of the fourth set was close, as there were several tied scores. Following an 11-11 deadlock, the Belles used two kills and a Comet attack error to go up 14-11. Two Saint Mary's setting errors made the score 14-13. A 5-0 run extended the Belles' lead to six points, and they did not relinquish it.
FOR THE COMETS
- Smith led all players with 14 kills.
- Hall tallied eight kills and six total blocks (two solo and four assisted).
- Junior Ellie Baynes, freshman Hailey Day and senior Morgan Good each had five kills.
- Junior Abby Chapman recorded 31 set assists.
- Senior Jaydn Cary collected a match-best 17 digs.
UP NEXT
- Olivet participates in the Bluffton (Ohio) University Sommer Spiketacular on Friday. The Comets play Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University at 5 p.m., followed by a match against the host Beavers at approximately 7 p.m.
