Football Team Defeats MIAA Co-Leader Adrian College, 23-10, in Olivet
The Olivet College football team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-leader Adrian College, 23-10, today at Griswold Field in Olivet. With the win, the Comets improve their record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. With the loss, the Bulldogs’ record falls to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. Adrian drops into a tie for second place with Albion in the league standings.
OLIVET, MI. -- The Olivet College football team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-leader Adrian College, 23-10, today at Griswold Field in Olivet. With the win, the Comets improve their record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. With the loss, the Bulldogs' record falls to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. Adrian drops into a tie for second place with Albion in the league standings.
In the win, the Comet rushing attack accounted for 374 of the team's 400 total offensive yards. Freshman Damien Brown (Harper Woods Gallagher High School) rushed for a team and career-high 173 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. In addition, sophomore Mick Faasen (Belding High School) had 27 carries for 114 yards and two scores. Sophomore quarterback Rick Mason (Belding High School) completed two-of-four passes for 26 yards.
Adrian took the opening kickoff and scored on a three-play, 63-yard drive. After stopping Adrian on its next possession at the six-yard line, the Comets responded with Brown scoring from 66 yards out and senior Eric Pocan (Lansing Sexton High School) added the extra point kick to tie the score at seven. In the second quarter, the Comets had a eight-play, 97-yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Faasen. Pocan then nailed a 27-yard field goal with 1:00 left to give Olivet a 17-7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Olivet used its ground attack to wear down the Adrian defense and run time off the clock. Faasen sealed the game with his second touchdown from five yards out with 41 seconds left in the game.
Defensively, senior linebacker Mike Hanna (Lake Odessa Lakewood High School) led the Comets with 10 tackles, including eight solo stops. The Comet defense also recovered a fumble and intercepted two passes. Defensive back Travis Lehman (Lake Odessa Lakewood High School) also had six tackles.
Running back Kevin Bostelman led the Bulldogs as he carried the ball 18 times for 110 yards. Quarterback Adam Tubaro completed 18 of 33 passes for 192 yards. Andy Keimer had eight catches for 103 yards.
Olivet will be idle next Saturday, Nov. 2. The Comets will then travel to Holland to face Hope College on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
