Men's swimming and diving team continues to lead after day two of 2007 MIAA Championships

Olivet's top finisher broke the school record in each of the seven events contested tonight. The Comets got off to a fast start as the 200-yard medley relay team of Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland), Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason), Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) and Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) was second with a NCAA Championships conditional qualifying time of 1:34.39.
In the championship finals of the 400-yard individual medley, Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus) touched the wall second in 4:09.72, which was also a conditional qualifying cut. Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/Holland Christian) placed third in 4:18.03, while Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) was 12th in 4:35.32.
Fetters was the only Olivet swimmer in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly and he finished fourth in 51.55 seconds. Busscher clocked in at 1:43.76 to finish fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Also in the 200 free, Aguirre was eighth, 1:45.67; followed by Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) in tenth, 1:46.47; and Nick Stone (Westland/John Glenn) in 12th, 1:47.33.
Meisner and Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) finished 2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Meisner recorded a conditional qualifying time of 57.19 seconds, and Key had a time of 59.06 seconds. During the prelims, Key swam a conditional qualifying time of 57.78 seconds. Jon Hon (Alma) was third in the consolation finals of the 100 breast in a time of 1:04.42.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Powers placed fifth at 54.48 seconds. In the prelims, he set the school record in 53.98 seconds. In the consolation finals of the 100 back, Brian Johnson (Lansing/Eastern) clocked-in at 54.78 seconds to place eighth overall. Fetters was tenth (:55.17) and Aguirre was 11th (:56.40).
After winning the one-meter diving title last night, Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) captured the three-meter diving title tonight and led the Comets to a 1-3-4-5 finish. He scored 439.60 points. Finishing third was Justin Hulsebos (Wayland), 399.20; followed by Andy Weiss (Fremont), 374.65; and Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge), 351.95.
The Comets' 800-yard freestyle relay team of Aguirre, Busscher, Bylina and Jason Wheatley (Portage/Central) placed third in 7:00.67.
Tomorrow's competition begins with preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
