Men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated by Calvin
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by Calvin College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) dual meets today at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. The men lost 161-111, while the women fell, 199-68.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by Calvin College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) dual meets today at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. The men lost 161-111, while the women fell, 199-68.
For the men, senior Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) took second-place in the 200 freestyle (1:51.81) and 50 freestyle (:22.16). Junior Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela / San Vicente de Paul) had the second-fastest time in his three individual three events, the 200 butterfly (2:02.02), 100 butterfly (:54.85) and 200 individual medley (2:03.02).
Sophomore Troy Wilkins (Lansing/Everett) claimed the top spot on both diving boards. He scored 253.75 points on the one-meter and broke the school record with 312.60 points on the three-meter. Wilkins' score on the three-meter is another NCAA qualification score, which makes him eligible to compete at the NCAA Central Region Diving Meet in February.
For the women, junior Shana Bush (Alma) placed second in the two distance freestyle events, stopping the clock at 11:34.23 in the 1,000 and 5:40.69 in the 500. She also swam in the 200 individual medley and finished 2:32.10. All three times were season-bests for Bush.
Sophomore Kira Gates (Grosse Ile) won the 200 freestyle (2:01.66) and was third in the 50 freestyle (:22.16). She also teamed with senior Milie Funk (Olivet), senior Alivia Hammond(Byron Center) and junior Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) for a first-place time of 3:50.68 in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Comets will compete at the 2013 Wabash (Ind.) College/Patrick Woehnker Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23. Friday's action starts at 7 p.m., and then resumes Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
