Swimming and diving teams begin competition at 2014 MIAA Championships
The first day of the 2014 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships at Calvin College’s Venema Aquatic Center is complete for the Olivet College swimming and diving teams.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The first day of the 2014 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships at Calvin College's Venema Aquatic Center is complete for the Olivet College swimming and diving teams. Tonight's events were only timed finals in the 800 freestyle relay and preliminaries of the men's 1-meter diving.
The Comet men placed fifth in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of junior Phil Bielak (Brownstown/Woodhaven), junior Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton), sophomore Eric Dawdy (Holt) and senior Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) stopped the clock at 7:02.61.
In the diving prelims, freshman Bryce Prudden (Charlotte) had the fourth-best score, totaling 378.10 points. He will compete in the finals of the event tomorrow night.
The Olivet women were sixth in the 800 freestyle relay. Sophomore Kira Gates (Grosse Ile), senior Milie Funk (Olivet), sophomore Megan Dossey (Trenton) and senior Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) touched the wall in 8:02.92.
Action continues tomorrow morning with preliminaries, starting at 10 a.m., and finals in the evening, starting at 5:30 p.m.
