Volleyball team bows to Kalamazoo in four sets
The Olivet College volleyball team lost a four-set match against Kalamazoo College tonight in its "Dig for the Cure" match at The Cutler Event Center. After the Hornets won the first set, 25-8, Olivet came back to win the second set, 25-11. Kalamazoo won the match with 25-19 and 25-17 victories in the third and fourth set, respectively.
Freshman Melanie Merchant (St. Joseph) was Olivet's front row leader with nine kills, followed by freshman Sam Gibson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and senior Kim Travis (Shepherd) with eight and seven, respectively. Senior Krystal Barkley (Flushing) recorded five total blocks. Junior Jenessa Hicks (Union City) dished out 18 set assists, while freshman Chelsea Guzikowski (Reed City) had 12. Sophomore libero Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta) recorded 22 digs. Hicks was next with 15 digs, while Guzikowski, Travis and junior Megan McCarty (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) had 10 apiece.
Olivet will participate in the Midwest Invitational at Calvin College this Friday. At 4 p.m., the Comets will play Calvin College in a MIAA match, and at 6 p.m, they will play a non-conference match against Manchester (Ind.) College.
