Volleyball team wins two matches at Kalamazoo College Hornet Invitational
The Olivet College volleyball team began its season with two wins today at the Kalamazoo College Hornet Invitational. In their first match, the Comets defeated Manchester (Ind.) College in four sets (25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 25-17), and in their second match, they beat Thiel (Pa.) College in straight sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-17).

The Olivet College volleyball team began its season with two wins today at the Kalamazoo College Hornet Invitational. In their first match, the Comets defeated Manchester (Ind.) College in four sets (25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 25-17), and in their second match, they beat Thiel (Pa.) College in straight sets (26-24, 25-21, 25-17).
For the day, freshman Melanie Merchant (St. Joseph) had a team-leading 18 kills. Freshman Sam Gibson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) finished with 16 kills, while junior Ellen Schulz (Freeland) had 10. Senior Krystal Barkley (Flushing) posted a team-high 10 blocks, followed by Schulz and sophomore Kendra Cavin (Jackson/Hanover-Horton) with six each.
At the service, Merchant and Schulz had five aces apiece. Defensively, sophomore Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta) collected 17 digs. Junior Morgan Iloncaie (Port Huron/Imlay City) had 14. Freshman Chelsea Guzikowski (Reed City) led Olivet with 32 set assists. Junior Jenessa Hicks (Union City) had 23 assists.
The Comets will play in the championship pool tomorrow. Their first match is at noon against Centre (Ky.) College, followed by a match against the host Hornets.
