Men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lose to Albion
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) dual meets to Albion College tonight at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet. The men’s team fell 150-117, while the women dropped a 169-106 decision.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) dual meets to Albion College tonight at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet. The men's team fell 150-117, while the women dropped a 169-106 decision.
The men's team took first-place in half of the events. In swimming events, sophomore Eric Dawdy (Holt) was the only double winner, as he won the 200 freestyle (1:48.21) and 200 backstroke (2:02.07).
Other winners were senior Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) in the 100 butterfly (:56.69), sophomore Taylor Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.79) and senior Korey Mervenne (Jenison) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:36.03). Freshman Bryce Prudden (Charlotte) claimed the top spot on both diving boards, scoring 203.75 points on the one-meter and 190.75 points on the three-meter.
Senior Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) placed second in the 100 freestyle (:49.80). Senior Adam Rhein (Leonard/Romeo) was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.29). The Comets' 400 freestyle relay quartet of Dawdy, junior Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton), Howard and Ben Aldrich finished in second-place (3:20.27).
The women's team had five individual event winners and one winning relay. Sophomore Kira Gates (Grosse Ile) and junior Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) were both triple winners. Gates touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.36) and 100 butterfly (1:03.15). Johnson took the top spot in sprint freestyle events, the 50 in 25.54 seconds and the 100 in 55.90 seconds.
Gates and Johnson teamed with seniors Alivia Hammond (Byron Center) and Katie Dobis (Munster, Ind.) for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:58.18). Placing second were junior Shana Bush (Alma) in the 500 freestyle (5:41.40), Dobis in the 200 backstroke (2:26.52), Hammond in the 100 backstroke (1:05.77), senior Raquel Mazur (Griffith, Ind.) in the 100 breaststroke and freshman Allyson Schultz (Traverse City/Central) in the 3-meter diving (145.30).
Olivet now turns its focus to the 2014 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 12-15 at Calvin College's Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. Action on Wednesday night includes only the timed finals in the 800 freestyle relay, starting at 7 p.m. The other three days have preliminaries each morning at 10 a.m., and finals at 5:30 p.m.
