UOlivet drops three-set match to Calvin in MCVL-opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Olivet men's volleyball team began the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) portion of its schedule with a three-set loss at Calvin University tonight inside Van Noord Arena.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Calvin defeated Olivet 25-13, 25-16, 25-21
- Location: Van Noord Arena; Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Records: Olivet 4-8 overall, 0-1 MCVL; Calvin 5-2 overall, 2-0 MCVL
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The early part of the first set was close, as there were five tied scores and three lead changes. Following an 8-8 deadlock, the Knights ended the set on a 17-5 run.
- The start of the second set was like the first, with five tied scores. After a 5-5 tie, Calvin scored the next two points and did not look back for the rest of the set.
- The third set began in similar fashion to the first two. With the score knotted at 8-8, the Knights used 10-3 spurt to go up 18-11. The Comets fought back to close the gap to two points, 19-17, but that was as close as they got for the remainder of the set.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet ended the match with 22 total kills.
- Freshman Jared Carter led the way with eight kills, followed by sophomore Silas Martin with five.
- Freshman Austin Chamblee recorded 18 set assists.
- Senior Matthew Tollar tallied a team-best eight digs.
UP NEXT
- Olivet returns to Grand Rapids tomorrow for two non-conference matches. The first is at 1 p.m. against Rockford (Ill) University, and the second is at 5:30 p.m. against St. Norbert College (Wis.).
