GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming teams opened their 2013-14 seasons by participating in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Relays. Calvin College hosted the unscored meet inside the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids.
The top finishing relay for the men's team was the third-place 1,500 freestyle trio of junior Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton), freshman Trey Jennings (Grand Haven) and senior Korey Mervenne (Jenison). They stopped the clock at 15:38.84. Overall, Olivet also had seven relays finish in fourth-place, two in fifth-place and one in sixth-place. The women's team had four relays finish in fifth and another four relays place sixth.
"Although we didn't win any of the relays, we swam well at the meet," said Head Coach Elise Knoche. "I was pleased with the times that Jimmy, Trey and Korey posted during our 3 x 500 men's relay. Also, Jazmin Johnson had great splits on the end of our medley and free relays. Kira Gates had an overall good meet as well."
The Comets will begin their dual meet schedule next Saturday, Oct. 26, when they host Kalamazoo College. Action at the Upton Center Pool starts at 1 p.m.
